acrylic on canvas paper, 16"x20", three canvas paper works.

Latin Cafe, Astoria Fruit Market II, 31st Ave Deli II, all acrylic on canvas paper, 16"x20", 2009.

'Astoria Fruit Market II' is a revisitation of the 1st AFM painting. Here the street scene is given a broader prominence. The passers by and shop keeper are treated with the same sensibility as the buildings etc. The row of facades create a repetitive and rhythmic expressiveness which is offset by a large green shrub in the foreground.

'Latin Cafe' with it's limited palette draws the viewer in to a world that is playful yet anonymous. The cross hatched upholstery is echoed on the floor tiles. The red clad figure's arm seems to draw the viewer toward the background where another red diagonal contour leads the eye toward the background.
There the suggestions of wall hanging pans and light fixtures are taken directly after the ink/quill drawing (Latin Cafe, Ink w/ gouache on paper, Eddie Ching, 2008; see below).

'31st Ave Deli II' is an explosion of color. Figures partake in youthful dialogue while a third loiters briefly before departing with his purchase. A row of empty flattened boxes await pickup on the curb. An "OPEN" LED sign burns brightly further suggesting to the viewer a sense of liveliness.

Deli on 31st Ave, acrylic on canvas paper, 16"x20", 5.19.09

While scouting for a "suitable" scene to paint, I'm drawn (no pun intended) to a location that has just the right balance of human interaction, non-interference of parking cars,... Then I'm looking around for a good spot nearby to set up, preferably a vacant store front so I can make myself at home.
I do need to dive in at some point or I end up scouting endlessly and give up. It's when I'm actually setup and painting that I feel like I've found "the trail" creatively. Most of the time I have no idea what I'll be painting that day.
If a relatively invisible, setup spot is adjacent to a busier street or scene, then there's a good chance that I'll be there (ha ha).

casa del pan (house of bread), view of, astoria, NY, acrylic on canvas paper, 16"x20", 5.15.09

Casa del Pan is a very small bakery/cafe in Astoria, NY. It's just one of those busy places where you can pretty much see a cross section of humanity walking. I mean Queens, NY is said to be one of the most ethnically diverse places on the face of the earth (as opposed to the interior). I digress.
I tried to capture some of the loaves of bread and the long mirror over the counter as the western light floods in.

Mid-October works of Central Park, New York City.

Hello again for return viewers of this blog or welcome to first timers. It's getting chilly in Central Park. This week the temperature got low enough to give people a serious wake up call; yes winter weather is approaching, perhaps sooner than anticipated....these temperatures can make your body feel uncomfortable.
The art works being published now display a rapid fire pen stroke, often times working it's way across the sheet like a woodpecker. Or with the patter of a squirrel whose job it is now to bury nuts. To be eaten later when the food is scarce.
I remembered Rembrandt van Rijn, or Leonardo da Vinci, and also Vincent van Gogh, during the making of these works, because they also worked on landscape with quill pen and ink. As they responded to the lights and darks of canopy, each came up with such different ways of responding to all that stimuli.

Here's a couple of new artworks that I'm adding that I did yesterday in Central Park (around 63rd Street). Both done in ink/pen, wash, and gouache. They are hopefully in alignment with the change. In alignment with evolution in creativity. Somehow enjoyment of the process is leading me to accept a less intellectual mode and embrace openness and risk. There are small steps taken here and there in the process that inevitably guild the flow.
Both works are smaller than usual; 9" x 12".

Hello, September is here. Time to take a course or two and continue on with this thing called art. But what is art? Is it making an image of or is it more? Connecting to the creative energy? Letting go of emotions and dreaming? I remember as a child, art making was great because it was play, it was imagination. Let that sense of play and fun come back into art process.
I think the these words come to mind when viewing my last drawing from yesterday. It's an ink drawing of a park; Central Park. Those people were sitting and lying there. Just being there with the sun and trees,...light and grass, water and life. I was there, I stirred, and played. What was I thinking? Make something that is salable? No, I chose to de-stress. I chose to do something that benefitted that moment! My interaction with that moment!
The trees are dreaming, the people are dreaming, the colors are just being..., not trying to be....not trying to emulate life.
