Latin Cafe, Astoria Fruit Market II, 31st Ave Deli II, all acrylic on canvas paper, 16"x20", 2009.
'Astoria Fruit Market II' is a revisitation of the 1st AFM painting. Here the street scene is given a broader prominence. The passers by and shop keeper are treated with the same sensibility as the buildings etc. The row of facades create a repetitive and rhythmic expressiveness which is offset by a large green shrub in the foreground.
'Latin Cafe' with it's limited palette draws the viewer in to a world that is playful yet anonymous. The cross hatched upholstery is echoed on the floor tiles. The red clad figure's arm seems to draw the viewer toward the background where another red diagonal contour leads the eye toward the background.
There the suggestions of wall hanging pans and light fixtures are taken directly after the ink/quill drawing (Latin Cafe, Ink w/ gouache on paper, Eddie Ching, 2008; see below).
'31st Ave Deli II' is an explosion of color. Figures partake in youthful dialogue while a third loiters briefly before departing with his purchase. A row of empty flattened boxes await pickup on the curb. An "OPEN" LED sign burns brightly further suggesting to the viewer a sense of liveliness.
