This is an original Barack Obama portrait that I painted yesterday. It's 14"x 18", oil on canvas, signed and dated by the artist (me). I originally painted this portrait to attract attention to my portrait business. However, a friend suggested I post it on ebay. I immediately agreed and as you can see, it is now on ebay. Auction ends on "Apr-02-08 22:35:12 PDT". Starting bid is only $.99 cents. Someone commented that the painting captures Obama's contagious smile.
These days I am working from my sketches and drawings instead of plein air painting. The drawings are almost all done with my quill pens (on paper) and ink, with some watercolor or gouache paint. The vitality of the lines made with the quill pens is really inspiring.
When I'm canvas painting, I fasten a drawing next to the easel (or on the easel) to look at. As I work I see in the drawing things that I was missing before. The process is not about copying the drawing onto the canvas. It could be described as a process of transmutation of what I see when I'm looking at the drawing.
